Texas Hill Country faces more severe flash floods as evacuations expand
Forecast rain of up to 20cm through Friday morning could worsen conditions after nearly 90 road and highway closures.
Mandatory evacuations are under way across Texas Hill Country as life-threatening flash floods damage bridges and roads, with more heavy rain expected overnight, according to SCMP Economy.
A wide swathe of Texas is forecast to receive as much as 20cm, or eight inches, of additional precipitation through Friday morning, following a week of downpours that has revived memories of last year’s deadly flooding.
The flooding has prompted almost 90 road and highway closures between San Antonio and the border town of Del Rio, complicating evacuations, while rescue crews including firefighters, state game wardens, and police have been deployed for people trapped by rising water.
Two deaths were reported, including a man whose recreational vehicle was swept away and a woman who was inundated while driving, while Black Hawk helicopters were used to extract stranded residents in Uvalde, about 135km west of San Antonio. Abbott said the Nueces River is forecast to swell overnight to up to twice the flow of Niagara Falls, a record volume.
