Chinese private tech firms push into defence AI as PLA goals near
A Hangzhou-based company, Jingan Technology, says it used open-source intelligence and AI analysis to flag a US surveillance build-up across the Middle East more than 50 days before US air strikes on Iran.
The People’s Liberation Army is about a year from its centenary goals for becoming a “world-class” fighting force, as artificial intelligence is increasingly used in combat roles, according to SCMP Economy.
In Beijing coverage, the outlet highlights Hangzhou-based Jingan Technology, which said its AI-powered analysis of open-source intelligence detected an unusually large concentration of US surveillance assets across the Middle East. The company made the claim in a post on January 6, describing the build-up as suggesting Washington “may already be in the midst of preparations” for a potential military operation more than 50 days ahead of the US air strikes on Iran.
SCMP Economy also notes that while industry observers have cautioned against Jingan’s marketing claims, public disclosures and company materials indicate its software has been deployed within China’s public security system and state security apparatus, and in some military branches.
The report frames Jingan as part of a growing group of Chinese private tech firms entering the rapidly expanding defence AI sector, driven by Beijing’s military-civil fusion strategy to integrate private companies into defense work.
