US and Iran trade strikes, escalating fights around the Strait of Hormuz
The renewed exchange comes after a preliminary deal meant to end fighting signed last month, and the US said the strikes would further degrade Iranian military capabilities.
The United States struck Iran and Tehran attacked US allies in the Gulf on Thursday as the conflict intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping chokepoint, according to Agence France-Presse via the SCMP Economy.
US Central Command said it was conducting a new wave of strikes Thursday evening, described as the sixth straight night of attacks by American forces, aimed at further degrading Iranian military capabilities.
Iranian state television reported explosions in Bushehr, where the country’s only civilian nuclear plant is located, and blasts in Bandar Abbas, while IRNA said there were attacks in areas around Ahvaz.
The fighting follows a preliminary deal signed last month intended to end the conflict that began in late February with massive US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Earlier, Iran warned it would target infrastructure across the region if US President Donald Trump followed through on a threat to attack power plants and bridges, while the White House said he remained open to diplomacy.
