US plans to refocus counterterrorism on left-wing groups
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the effort would involve mapping the threat and rebuilding counterterrorism architecture, as Democrats raised concerns about politicising the focus.
The United States will seek to refocus international counterterrorism cooperation on left-wing groups, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Washington during a conference that included officials from more than 60 countries, according to SCMP Economy.
Rubio argued that violence from far-left actors has been overlooked and said the US can identify and map the threat and rebuild its counterterrorism architecture to defeat it, pointing to a transnational threat from groups that target Western politicians and infrastructure.
The conference has prompted Democratic concerns that the Trump administration is politicising counterterrorism and diverting resources away from other extremist threats, with critics saying the emphasis is not supported by data.
SCMP Economy noted that President Donald Trump has made countering left-wing groups a priority, including singling out antifa during the 2024 campaign and vowing action after the killing of conservative activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk last year.
