x402 Foundation forms to set open payment standard for AI agents

The x402 protocol aims to let AI agents transact over HTTP without subscriptions or manual credit card entry, with premier members including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Stripe.

CoinDesk reports the newly convened x402 Foundation is creating an open payment standard for internet transactions involving AI agents, machines and users, using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as the common language.

The group describes x402 as a payment protocol designed to enable transactions without subscriptions or requiring users to manually enter credit card details. It was initially developed by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and is now stewarded by the x402 Foundation.

CoinDesk says the foundation includes 40 members, with premier participants spanning major payments and consumer platforms such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, as well as infrastructure and crypto-related organizations including Ripple, Circle and the Solana Foundation.

The foundation is also searching for an executive director and has formed a technical steering committee. In an interview cited by CoinDesk, Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon framed the effort as a way to avoid “walled garden” control while building a more open global financial system for emerging AI-driven commerce, including micropayments.
