Balaji threatens to leave Malaysia after probe of Network School
Malaysia authorities are investigating Balaji Srinivasan’s Forest City tech community in Johor over immigration claims involving Israelis, while he says new investment will pause without “sufficient assurance.”
Cointelegraph reports that Network School founder Balaji Srinivasan is seeking a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia after authorities probed his Forest City tech community in Johor, following allegations it hosted Israeli citizens using second passports.
Malaysia’s Home Affairs Ministry said it is investigating the community after claims it included Israelis in violation of immigration laws. Initial checks found that all 266 foreign residents had valid documents.
Srinivasan said the agreement would give Network School legal certainty to continue investing in Malaysia, adding that without it, the community could redirect its capital to other countries. He also addressed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a video, saying he wants a document that reflects personal welcome, not just general statements.
Cointelegraph adds that Srinivasan launched Network School in August 2024 in Johor’s Forest City, about an hour from Singapore, marketing it as a physical community for tech builders. He announced that further investment in Malaysia, including a $122 million expansion plan, would be put on hold until he receives sufficient assurance that such issues will not recur.
