California couple admits they only check bank account when charges bounce

The couple, raising four children and juggling mounting debt, said they largely do not monitor spending, while a U.S. Bank survey found 46% of Gen Z adults avoid checking balances.

A young California couple raising four children told Caleb Hammer on his Financial Audit podcast that they rarely review their bank account and only notice issues “unless it bounces,” while struggling with mounting debt and untracked expenses, according to Yahoo Finance.

The pair described a shared, complex household setup that includes living on the same property as Emma’s ex-husband and splitting responsibilities across households, but said that financial avoidance and impulse spending helped their spending habits spiral into major problems.

According to the article, financial avoidance is widespread, with a U.S. Bank survey finding 46% of Gen Z adults avoid checking their bank account balances, and a Capital One survey reporting 52% of Americans have difficulty controlling concerns about cash.

Yahoo Finance also noted that money stress can strain relationships for roughly one-in-four respondents, though it may include factors beyond couples, and it framed the couple’s situation as a case of blind spots and lack of ownership of the numbers.
