Hong Kong welcomes expiry of Trump US emergency order on city
The US Treasury said the expiration would not affect two related laws, including the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and the Hong Kong Autonomy Act.
The Hong Kong government welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to let a US national emergency declaration concerning the city expire, a reversal of a policy Washington put in place after Beijing enacted Hong Kong’s 2020 national security law, according to SCMP Economy.
The emergency declaration had supported earlier US moves to end Hong Kong’s preferential treatment in areas including trade and export controls, the article said. The declaration expired this week after Trump did not renew it for another year.
SCMP Economy also noted that the US Treasury said the expiration does not apply to or affect two related US laws, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 and the Hong Kong Autonomy Act of 2020.
Hong Kong said the limited expiration was an important step toward implementing a China US consensus, while urging the United States to respect Chinese sovereignty and restore normal economic and trade ties, as quoted in the report.
