Hong Kong backs Trump decision not to renew emergency declaration
The US emergency declaration that supported changes to Hong Kong’s trade and export controls expired after President Donald Trump did not renew it for another year.
Hong Kong’s government welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to let a national emergency declaration covering the city expire, calling it an important step toward a China-US consensus following the Beijing national security law enacted in 2020, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports the declaration had underpinned Washington’s decision to end Hong Kong’s preferential treatment in areas including trade and export controls, and it expired this week because Trump did not renew it for another year.
Hong Kong’s government said the move supports Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability and urged the United States to respect Chinese sovereignty and the rule of law in the city while restoring normal economic and trade ties.
SCMP Economy added that the US State Department and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
