Iran warns it may shut Red Sea oil route through Houthi move
The reported plan hinges on possible US strikes on Iranian power infrastructure, with the Houthis’ actions coordinated by the IRGC.
Iran has asked Yemen’s Houthi militia to stand ready to close the Red Sea oil route through the Bab El-Mandeb Strait if the United States strikes Iranian power infrastructure, Reuters reported.
A source close to the Houthis said the group has completed preparations to attack shipping by deploying missiles and drones near the Bab El-Mandeb Strait, the main gateway into the Red Sea from Yemen’s highlands toward the Gulf of Aden.
The source also said representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are already in Yemen and would control the timing of any closure of the Bab El-Mandeb Strait.
The report added that earlier Thursday, Tasnim news agency reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Ahvaz, including an attack targeting the bridge connecting Bandar Abbas to Shiraz, with power outages affecting areas in Kahorstan.
