Europe heat and drought disrupt refineries and power generation

Standard Chartered says extreme heat and drought both raise fuel demand and constrain refiners’ ability to produce fuels efficiently.

Extreme heat and drought are starting to impair Europe’s energy system, with higher temperatures reducing refinery cooling efficiency and lowering river levels that can force cuts to nuclear generation, OilPrice reports. The same conditions have been linked to falling hydroelectric output and more expensive inland fuel transport as barges carry smaller loads.

Temperatures above 40°C are becoming more common across large parts of southern and central Europe, while prolonged drought is shrinking rivers, drying soils, and fueling destructive wildfires, according to OilPrice. A World Weather Attribution analysis cited in the article concluded that human-driven climate change has substantially increased the likelihood and intensity of these extreme weather events, turning what used to be seasonal heat into a recurring operational constraint for Europe’s oil and power sectors.

The article says the energy system is already under pressure from other disruptions, including crude supply strains tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict. While seasonal temperature shifts have historically moved energy prices through changing heating and cooling demand, commodity analysts at Standard Chartered are now warning that extreme heat and drought are directly affecting refiners’ production efficiency.

OilPrice adds that, although each individual effect may be relatively small, the combination is increasing strain on the continent’s oil and power markets by simultaneously pushing up demand and limiting supply capacity. The article stops short of providing market-wide pricing figures, but frames the operational impacts as the key near-term channel through which climate is affecting energy output.
