Magnitude 7.3 earthquake off Mexico triggers tsunami warnings

The quake was initially assessed as 7.4 at shallow depth, then revised to 7.3 at 15.2 km, with tsunami waves possible within 300 km of the epicenter.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas on Friday, shaking buildings across the border in Guatemala and El Salvador, according to Reuters, citing local authorities and regional leaders.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said emergency protocols were activated, with authorities reporting no issues in Chiapas or the neighboring state of Tabasco. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo said there were no deaths, Reuters reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 15.2 km after revising an earlier assessment of a magnitude 7.4 quake at a shallower 10 km. Following the tremor, the US Tsunami Warning System said hazardous tsunami waves were possible along coasts within 300 km of the epicenter, which was about 58 km from Puerto Madero, with potential wave heights between 0.3 meters and one meter above tide level for some locations in Mexico and Guatemala.
