Influencer killed during live stream in Mexico state of Sinaloa

Authorities said the killing occurred near the local prosecutor’s office during rush hour, and President Claudia Sheinbaum said the perpetrators must be arrested.

A gunman killed social media influencer Cesar Gastelum during a live stream in Mexico’s northwestern state of Sinaloa, authorities said, with officials noting the killing appeared to be tied to cartel violence.

The attack happened Tuesday night in the state capital of Culiacan, occurring just blocks from the local prosecutor’s office during rush hour, according to reporting. A video viewed by Associated Press shows Gastelum laughing in a car park at a Kentucky Fried Chicken when two men arrive on a motorcycle, one pulls out a gun, and he is shot. The attackers then flee.

Mexican authorities said an investigation is ongoing and implied the killing was linked to cartel violence, without blaming any specific group. They also said Gastelum had released videos in which he alluded to a faction of a criminal group.

During a Wednesday news conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the perpetrators must be arrested, while Mexico’s Security Cabinet and local prosecutors continued investigating.
