China develops AI robot for needle-free pig vaccinations
The robot uses a camera to track pigs for buttock-targeted injections, aiming to reduce issues such as broken needles, missed doses, and inaccurate placement.
Robotics and AI are being combined in China to automate routine pig vaccinations as the country seeks to scale production in its large pork industry, according to SCMP Economy.
The system tracks pigs using a camera to locate the base of the tail before delivering a needle-free injection into the buttock, a workflow designed to replace labor-intensive vaccination cycles that require multiple shots.
Researchers at the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, as described by SCMP Economy, said the robot achieved a 93.3 percent success rate in its reported study, published in June in the peer-reviewed journal Transactions of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering.
The outlet also cited the researchers saying current vaccination still depends largely on human workers, creating problems including broken needles, missed injections, and inaccurate placement.
