Moonshot AI unveils Kimi K3 with 2.8 trillion parameters
Moonshot says the model will be released as open source on July 27, positioning it as the first freely downloadable, customizable model in the three trillion parameter class.
Chinese AI start-up Moonshot has unveiled Kimi K3, a large artificial intelligence model it says can compete with leading US systems. The company said the model includes 2.8 trillion parameters and is designed to handle tasks including coding, knowledge work, and reasoning.
Moonshot plans to release Kimi K3 as an open-source model on July 27, describing it as its most capable flagship to date. The company also said the system is built to operate with minimal human supervision to sustain tasks such as engineering and coding.
The launch comes amid heightened scrutiny of advanced AI software in the United States, after the US government forced Anthropic to temporarily withdraw its flagship models over cybersecurity concerns. Washington later lifted the restrictions, but the BBC Business report said the episode reflected a view that frontier models are critical national infrastructure tied to export controls.
According to third-party evaluations cited by BBC Business, Kimi K3 performed roughly on par with top models from OpenAI and Anthropic in external benchmarks, including ranking first in web interface engineering in one test. The outlet also noted Moonshot is backed by domestic tech giants Alibaba and Tencent.
