Pakistan launches crackdown on undocumented Afghan residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Mattani near Peshawar, residents say authorities demolished many of the settlement’s 200 houses during the month, with nationwide visa enforcement taking effect July 10.

Pakistan has carried out a large scale crackdown on undocumented Afghan residents in its northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border province, prompting families to pack belongings or hide at home as police conducted identity checks and forced departures, according to reports citing community members and officials.

In the settlement of Mattani near Peshawar, residents said authorities demolished many of the area’s 200 houses this month. One resident said officials would not listen when he tried to retrieve his father’s medication and children’s school certificates before ordering demolition.

The crackdown follows a June order from Pakistan’s interior ministry directing law enforcement to arrest Afghan citizens without visas, with the deadline starting July 10. The interior ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the demolitions, Agence France Presse said via SCMP Economy.
