FIFA set to announce $15bn World Cup revenue, beating earlier plan
The additional income is attributed to hospitality and ticketing, including revenue from FIFA’s secondary ticket market take.
FIFA is expected to announce record World Cup revenues of $15 billion from this summer’s tournament, after originally projecting $11 billion in earnings, according to the Guardian Business. The organization has told its member associations about the higher-than-expected figures ahead of the Sunday final.
The Guardian Business reports that sources point to hospitality and ticketing as key drivers, with a notable role for the secondary ticket market where prices are steep. FIFA takes 15% from the buyer and another 15% from the seller on secondary market transactions.
The higher revenue outlook could expand the funds available for football associations, though the final allocation details are not yet finalized, the Guardian Business adds. The boost also comes as Gianni Infantino seeks support for his re-election in March, with FIFA saying it has received more than 200 pledges of support from member associations.
The Guardian Business notes that the prospect of extra World Cup money may reduce the likelihood of public complaints from some federations. It also cites talks around possible future FIFA events, including the United States’ interest in hosting another World Cup and discussions on hosting the Club World Cup in 2029.
