Taiwan seeks court order to dissolve pro-Beijing CUPP party

Taiwan’s interior ministry is asking the Constitutional Court to declare the Chinese Unification Promotion Party unconstitutional and dissolve it, citing alleged links to organized crime and threats to the constitutional order.

Taiwan’s interior ministry is seeking a Constitutional Court order to have the pro-Beijing Chinese Unification Promotion Party (CUPP) declared unconstitutional and dissolved, a first in Taiwan’s history for action against a political party, according to SCMP Economy.

The ministry argues the CUPP’s objectives and activities endanger the existence of the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name, and the island’s free and democratic constitutional order.

Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang said the CUPP has long been linked to organized crime, including cross-border offenses, as he addressed the case at a briefing last week.
