Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara arrives in US exile
Otero Alcantara landed in Miami after serving a five-year sentence imposed in 2022, following his 2021 detention amid anti-government protests.
Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara arrived in the United States for exile after completing a five-year prison term in Cuba, according to Agence France-Presse.
AFP reported that he flew to Miami, after a short trip from Havana, with the account based on a video shared with the outlet by his friend and activist Anamely Ramos.
Otero Alcantara was sentenced in 2022 for insulting national symbols, contempt, and disturbing the public order, and he was later designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.
Washington has urged Havana to release more than 700 political prisoners, as Otero Alcantara rose to prominence in 2020 as a leader of the San Isidro protest movement of artists and intellectuals and was detained in July 2021 while leaving his home to join mass protests.
