Mount Fuji climbs raise rescue and fatality risks as season starts
Last year, Japan recorded 3,623 mountain rescues and 332 deaths, data cited from the National Police Agency.
Japan’s official Mount Fuji climbing season has only just started, but veteran climber Tatsuo Nanai says he is already worried about how many people will need rescuing before the trails close again in mid-September.
Nanai, formerly secretary general of the Fuji-san Club, warned that Mount Fuji is often underestimated and can be dangerous for those who take it lightly, particularly when visitors are not prepared for conditions at altitude.
The South China Morning Post reports that Japan logged a new high in mountain emergencies last year, with 3,623 people rescued and 332 deaths, citing National Police Agency data.
