Indonesia sovereign wealth fund Danantara targets continuity through returns

Danantara’s CIO said the fund is focused on profit, supporting Jakarta’s stock-market demutualisation and a Bali financial centre to build investor confidence.

Indonesia’s Danantara sovereign wealth fund needs to “outlast presidencies” to prove its value, according to the fund’s chief investment officer, Pandu Sjahrir, who framed continuity as key to delivering for investors and the public.

Sjahrir said Danantara’s priorities include the demutualisation of Jakarta’s stock market, along with efforts to support the establishment of the first financial centre in Bali aimed at boosting investor confidence.

Speaking at a panel discussion with Tengku Zafrul Aziz, chairman of Malaysia’s Investment Development Authority, Sjahrir added that success would be the best way to guarantee continuity across administrations, with the fund’s leadership expected to stay disciplined in its mandate.

He said Danantara’s focus is strictly on profit and on delivering high, sustainable returns, positioning the strategy as a way to maintain support beyond political cycles.
