Thousands of Israelis march near Gaza border, demand settlement return

The demonstration was aimed at pressuring Israel to authorize a return to Gaza more than two decades after the 2005 disengagement plan evacuated settlements.

Thousands of Israelis, including settlers and right wing activists, marched toward the Gaza border on Sunday to urge the Israeli government to re establish settlements in the war shattered territory, according to coverage by SCMP Economy citing an Agence France Presse journalist.

Demonstrators gathered near the border before walking toward the fence overlooking northern Gaza, where Israeli security forces were deployed to prevent them from advancing further, AFP footage showed soldiers and police blocking access to the restricted area.

Some participants waved Israeli flags during the march, with one participant, Daniel Sellem, saying the protest was meant to tell the government and show supporters that the land should belong to them and that they want to go back to Gaza.

Sellem said the rally was intended to push the government to authorize a return to Gaza, more than two decades after Israel evacuated all settlements from the territory under a 2005 disengagement plan.
