US says another soldier died in Iraq ordnance detonation
The latest death raised the US Iran-war toll to 17, after earlier US fatalities reported during operations in Jordan.
The US military said another service member died in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, bringing the reported US death toll in the Iran conflict to 17, according to SCMP Economy.
US Central Command said a second soldier sustained minor injuries and was receiving medical treatment, and that unidentified human remains were recovered after a search of the site, with identification work under way.
SCMP Economy also noted that the previous day the US military reported two other soldiers had been killed in an operation in Jordan on Friday, the first reported US fatalities since the latest escalation with Iran.
The report added that Iranian government figures cited by SCMP Economy put at least 50 deaths and more than 500 injuries from the latest US strikes in the Gulf, while also noting that Iran typically reports civilian casualties and does not provide official military loss figures.
