US security commission delegation holds China fact finding on tech ties
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission is seeking meetings with Chinese officials and US companies in sectors including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and robotics.
Delegates from the United States US-China Economic and Security Review Commission are making their first trip to China in seven years to examine how the countries’ economic and trade relationship intersects with national security, according to SCMP Economy.
The commission said it requested meetings in Beijing with Chinese government officials, academics, and industry leaders in technology areas including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and robotics, while also scheduling meetings with US diplomats and American companies operating in China during the week-long fact-finding visit.
SCMP Economy noted the panel is an independent body established by Congress in 2000 to advise lawmakers on national security implications tied to US-China trade and economic ties. The commission last visited mainland China in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, and also visited Hong Kong in May 2019.
In remarks reported by SCMP Economy, the commission’s chairman Randall Schriver said the trip is intended to understand the relationship rather than reset it.
