Viral tiger-head bag boosts sales of intangible heritage goods online
Sales of intangible cultural heritage and handicraft items reached an annual 100.0 billion yuan across Taobao and Tmall, according to industry data.
Sales of intangible heritage products in China are rising, drawing attention to a viral tiger-head bag that surged after Elon Musk’s six-year-old son, Little X, wore a Chinese-style silk jacket and carried the bag during a May visit to Beijing that included US President Donald Trump, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet cited industry data showing intangible cultural heritage and traditional handicraft goods reached an annual transaction value of 100.0 billion yuan, or US$14.8 billion, across major e-commerce platforms Taobao and Tmall last year.
SCMP Economy reported that more than 7,000 pieces of the bag, priced at 398 yuan each, had been sold so far, as stated by the producer.
The producer, Yestee Handmade, said the viral success helped introduce its brand to more consumers and noted that sales of related accessories such as hats and mobile phone bags have also increased, with each tiger-head bag taking about a week to make using complex techniques.
