Hong Kong panel urges law to ban under-16s from social media

A survey of 686 residents found 61.8% supported restricting social media access for under-16s, with parent support rising to 76.3%.

Hong Kong education experts and lawmakers are calling for legislation to bar children under 16 from social media, arguing that the policy signal is needed to protect minors from cyberbullying and social media addiction, according to the SCMP Economy.

At a panel discussion on Saturday reviewing proposals to restrict access for under-16s, educators said legislation would help raise public awareness and safeguard children from harmful content, including pornography and bullying.

SCMP Economy also cited comments from educators that without legal action, the next generation could be harmed by persistent exposure to these platforms.

The outlet reported that a New Youth Forum survey of 686 randomly selected residents aged 18 or above, conducted from May 22 to June 5, found 61.8% backed legislation restricting under-16s, and support rose to 76.3% among parents.
