Andy Burnham pledges a new economic model as UK prime minister

Burnham said his government’s first priority is to end rough sleeping after entering Downing Street.

Andy Burnham became Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade on Monday, pledging to break with past political patterns and deliver a new economic model aimed at raising living standards, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, the 56-year-old former Greater Manchester mayor said politicians had not provided the stability needed for better living standards and that he would act with immediate policies while a longer term plan is drawn up later this year.

Burnham framed the moment as a “circuit-breaker” and said his administration would pursue the biggest changes in the last 40 years, following his predecessor and Labour colleague Keir Starmer’s farewell speech earlier that day.

In his first stated priority after taking office, Burnham said his team would focus on ending rough sleeping.
