White House asks Greece ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign

The White House has asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign, according to a briefing by new press secretary Katie Zacharia, as reported by CNBC Markets and CNBC World.

Zacharia said the request was made by the White House, and she discussed the decision during her debut briefing, according to CNBC Markets.

SCMP Economy adds that the resignation request came amid severe criticism and allegations that Guilfoyle engaged in improper and possibly illegal conduct before and during her tenure in Athens.

SCMP Economy also noted it was not immediately clear if Guilfoyle had actually resigned at the time of Zacharia's remarks.
