Cardano activates van Rossem hard fork
The network upgraded from protocol version 10 to 11 across epochs 643 to 644, and the change is intended to reduce smart contract execution costs.
Cardano has activated its van Rossem hard fork, upgrading the Cardano mainnet to version 11 as of Saturday, according to Cointelegraph. The update is designed to lower smart contract execution costs while setting up the next phase of Cardano scalability work.
Cointelegraph reports that onchain data from CardanoScan showed the network moved from protocol version 10 in epoch 643 to version 11 in epoch 644. The upgrade also includes Plutus improvements and updates to the Plutus Cost Model, which the development team said supports subsequent changes.
Cointelegraph adds that van Rossem is intended to lay the groundwork for Ouroboros Leios, a major scalability upgrade expected later this year, with a targeted launch in late 2026. Ouroboros Leios aims to raise transactions per second without weakening Ouroboros proof-of-stake security guarantees.
Cointelegraph also notes that van Rossem is the first governance-driven hard fork in Cardano’s history. Earlier upgrades were coordinated by Input Output, the engineering company behind the Cardano blockchain, the outlet said.
