EU fines AliExpress €550 million for illegal product sales
The penalty is the largest ever under the EU’s Digital Services Act, applied after an investigation launched in March 2024.
The European Union has fined online retailer AliExpress €550 million, or about US$630 million, after finding that some products sold on the platform did not meet the bloc’s environmental and safety standards.
According to the EU, the investigation, which began in March 2024, also found AliExpress did not do enough to curb counterfeit goods and that many illegal items stayed online for weeks after detection.
The EU said risks should be identified and addressed systematically to protect consumers when shopping online, and it called on AliExpress to take action. SCMP Economy, citing an AFP story, said the fine is the largest ever imposed under the EU’s Digital Services Act.
