Hong Kong customs arrests 13 over World Cup fake merchandise
Authorities said an eight week operation from May 26 to Sunday found 50 infringements and involved 13 arrests tied to online sales of counterfeit jerseys and other items.
Hong Kong customs officers arrested 13 people and seized counterfeit merchandise worth about HK$159 million (US$20.3 million) during the World Cup period, according to SCMP Economy.
The Customs and Excise Department said it detected 50 infringements during an eight week operation from May 26 to Sunday, confiscating about 240,000 suspected counterfeit items including football jerseys, shoes and footballs.
Customs also warned about rising participation by young people in online infringement, with 12 of the arrests linked to alleged sales of counterfeit football jerseys on the internet. Ng Ka-chun said the number of young people arrested over similar online offences increased from one in 2024 to two last year, and he said the suspects were not believed to be connected, with each offering between one and 40 shirts for sale.
