Major banks grow mortgage volumes 20.8% in Q2 2026
Keefe, Bruyette & Woods data show agency issuance rose 11% quarter over quarter, with Ginnie Mae issuance up 20% to $159 billion.
Large banks increased mortgage activity in Q2 2026, with a combined mortgage volume of $56.1 billion, up 20.8% from Q1, according to an analysis by HousingWire citing Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.
The KBW note points to potential share gains for banks versus nonbank originators, supported by rising agency issuance and mixed results across independent mortgage companies.
In the KBW sample, Wells Fargo posted the biggest sequential percentage increase, up 42.9%, while Truist rose 32.8% and Fifth Third grew 31.6%. U.S. Bank was the only bank with negative sequential growth, down 7.6%.
Agency securitization also signaled stronger bank-linked activity, with total agency issuance climbing 11% quarter over quarter. KBW reported Ginnie Mae issuance rose 20% to $159 billion and GSE issuance increased 6% to $214 billion, while JPMorgan, the largest bank securitizer in the set, recorded a 29% quarter over quarter production gain.
