Pound edges higher after UK leadership transition

GBP/USD was up 0.1% near 1.3470 at press time following Keir Starmer’s resignation delivery to King Charles.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered his resignation to King Charles at Buckingham Palace after becoming the seventh PM since Britain’s exit from the European Union, FXStreet reported.

The outlet said the British pound reacted positively to what it described as a smooth leadership transition, with GBP/USD trading 0.1% higher near 1.3470 at press time.

FXStreet also noted that the pound is issued by the Bank of England and that monetary policy decisions, including interest-rate moves aimed at maintaining price stability around 2% inflation, are key drivers of sterling.

The story added that economic indicators such as GDP, manufacturing and services PMIs, employment, and the UK trade balance can influence GBP direction, since they can affect expectations for Bank of England rate changes.
