Taiwan reviews PNG LNG imports after Taipei office shut over one-China

Taipei said it launched a review of bilateral economic ties, including long-term LNG imports, after Papua New Guinea moved to close Taipei’s unofficial representative office.

Taiwan is reviewing liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Papua New Guinea after PNG said it would close Taipei’s unofficial representative office, a decision tied to Beijing’s one-China policy, the SCMP Economy reported.

PNG announced the immediate shutdown, citing Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko’s statement that the move reflected the government’s commitment to the one-China policy ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Beijing. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian welcomed the closure, saying it demonstrated adherence to the one-China principle and that Beijing would continue to support Port Moresby on each side’s core interests while deepening their strategic partnership.

Taipei criticised the decision, saying it had not been consulted beforehand and that it would keep its office open while negotiating with Port Moresby. Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said the government has launched a review of bilateral economic ties, including long-term LNG imports.
