Trump imposes 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods under Section 338

Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, citing Canada’s alleged unfair discrimination against U.S. cars, alcohol and dairy products, according to SCMP Economy.

An administration official previewing the action said Canada, along with China, was among the few countries that retaliated against Trump’s previous tariffs and should be held accountable, the outlet reported.

The official said Trump signed three proclamations to launch the tariffs under Section 338 of the 1930 Trade Act, and Democratic lawmakers previously proposed repealing the section, arguing it could be used to destabilize the economy.

SCMP Economy also noted the move could trigger a new round of economic disruption, including heightened inflation risks and further deterioration in U.S.-Canada relations.
