US strikes Iran again as missile fire toward Jordan raises risks
Shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has largely stalled, and the conflict has killed 17 US service members since it began.
The United States launched another round of air strikes against Iran early on Monday, after announcing the death of an American service member in Iraq over the weekend. Iran fired missiles toward Jordan, heightening concern that the fighting could widen to neighboring Israel, according to reporting from SCMP Economy.
The US military said the service member died on Saturday during the “controlled detonation” of a downed Iranian drone. The outlet also reported that the strikes were aimed at Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the killing of troops in Jordan on Friday, after which one US service member went missing.
SCMP Economy said the military later stated that “unidentified remains” were found on Sunday and were being examined. The report adds that both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure relied on by millions of people.
The source said the risks come as a last month’s interim deal aimed at permanently ending the fighting has crumbled. It also reported that shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has largely stalled and that 17 US service members have been killed since the conflict began.
