EU lawmakers begin China visit amid trade and geopolitical tensions
The European Parliament delegation will hold talks in Beijing and Shanghai, focusing on tech sovereignty, competition, and global AI governance.
A European Parliament delegation has started a three-day visit to China to meet senior officials in Beijing and Shanghai as strained ties intensify, with trade friction and expanding EU import curbs cited as key drivers, according to SCMP Economy.
The eight-member group from the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by committee chairman David McAllister, arrived in China on Tuesday for the committee’s first visit, and will also meet Chinese foreign policy officials during its stay.
In Beijing, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the delegation to broaden exchanges across Chinese society to build a more genuine and evolving perspective on China, and said disputes should be handled as partners while avoiding the politicisation of normal economic and trade matters.
The lawmakers, which include members from Germany, Spain, Italy, Czechia, Poland, and Belgium, are also scheduled to travel to Shanghai to meet municipal officials and technology representatives, with topics including tech sovereignty, competition, and global governance of AI.
