European convective storms in July could trigger billion-euro losses

Aon estimates the July 10 to 17, 2026 event could cause insured and economic losses totaling at least hundreds of millions of euros, with hail the main driver and most impacts concentrated in France and Germany.

Widespread severe convective storms across Europe between July 10 and 17, 2026 are expected to generate substantial economic and insured losses, with Aon warning that damage assessments could push the sequence toward a billion-euro industry event, according to its Weekly Cat Report.

Aon said the losses were primarily driven by hail, with strong winds and localized flash flooding also contributing, and that most losses were concentrated in France and Germany.

The report adds that agriculture is expected to be a major contributor to overall financial losses. In Germany, agricultural insurer Vereinigte Hagel reported around 100,000 hectares of agricultural land damaged and expected losses of at least EUR 50 million, though Aon noted estimates may change as more claims information becomes available.

Aon also described the storm setup and timing, citing a high pressure ridge that trapped a moist, hot air mass over western and central Europe. It said the bulk of damage occurred during storm sequences from July 13 to 17, with the costliest episode hitting Hannover on July 13 and additional hail damage occurring across multiple regions in France, Switzerland, and southern Germany in subsequent days.
