Hong Kong police arrest 991 in World Cup illegal gambling crackdown

Police said betting records uncovered in the operation totaled about HK$365 million, alongside seizures of HK$3 million in cash and HK$4.4 million in valuables.

Hong Kong police said they arrested 991 people and uncovered betting records totaling about HK$365 million during a crackdown on illegal gambling tied to the World Cup, according to SCMP Economy.

The force said it raided 249 premises suspected of being linked to illegal gambling during an enforcement campaign held in June and July. Officers arrested 645 men and 346 women, ages 16 to 93, on suspicion of offences including promoting bookmaking, operating illegal gambling establishments, and money laundering.

Police also seized HK$3 million in cash and HK$4.4 million in valuables, along with 43 computers and 443 mobile phones allegedly used to facilitate bookmaking. The force added that it ran preventive education campaigns to combat illegal gambling.

The arrests and seizures were made as part of efforts to target activities around the global sporting event, SCMP Economy said.
