Hong Kong to accelerate water main replacements after Shau Kei Wan outage
The Water Supplies Department said budgeted spending on water main replacement in the current financial year will rise by more than 50.0% versus last year.
Hong Kong authorities have pledged to introduce a smart management system and speed up the replacement of water mains after residents in Shau Kei Wan were left without fresh water for more than a day, SCMP Economy reported.
The Water Supplies Department said improvement work is already under way for about 50km (31 miles) of water mains, with new replacement works covering about 40km scheduled to begin by the end of the year.
The department also said budgeted expenditure for replacing water mains in the current financial year will increase by more than 50.0% compared with last year.
The outage affected about 10,000 homes, starting around 6am on Sunday, and also disrupted hundreds of shops, restaurants and other businesses across multiple streets and estates in the area.
