Hong Kong Book Fair sees sales slump as shoppers stay away
Exhibitors estimated overall sales may fall 30 to 40 percent versus last year, with foot traffic down further from already subdued levels.
More than 1,000 shoppers attended the final day of the annual Hong Kong Book Fair on Tuesday, but booksellers told the South China Morning Post that the event saw weaker foot traffic and spending than last year.
Several exhibitors attributed the softer turnout to shifting consumer habits and unstable weather during the seven-day fair, with one editor saying foot traffic fell further from last year’s already subdued levels.
The outlet reported that some books continued to sell relatively well, including titles on supernatural topics and fortune-telling, while an SCMP reporter said most visitors were empty-handed and few were seen pushing trolleys or suitcases, a common sight in past editions.
Based on booksellers’ expectations relayed by SCMP, overall sales could drop by 30 to 40 percent compared with last year.
