House hunters prioritize clean homes with advanced filtration, Redfin survey finds

In a Redfin survey of 4,000 U.S. residents, 36% of movers within 12 months said a clean home ranked among their top three priorities, tying closely with security systems at 38%.

More than one-third of U.S. house hunters planning to move within the next year say a “clean” home, defined as one with high-end filtration for air and water, is among their top three priorities for their next place, according to Redfin. In the survey, 36% of prospective movers ranked clean homes in their top three, statistically equal to the share who prioritized security systems at 38%.

Redfin said the findings come from an Ipsos survey conducted in May 2026 and fielded to 4,000 U.S. residents, focusing on the roughly 1,000 respondents planning to move within 12 months. Beyond clean homes and security, views were the next most common top-three priority at 25%, followed by smart-home technology at 20%.

The report also found backup power generation, such as solar panels or generators, was ranked in the top five priorities by 19% of house hunters, while climate-resilient upgrades or features were a top consideration for 14%. Redfin said health and climate-risk-related features were generally rated higher than certain luxury upgrades, including home theaters (7%), outdoor kitchens (10%), and tennis courts (4%).

Redfin tied the results to a broader environmental risk backdrop, noting that smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed much of the eastern U.S. last week. The company said air quality alerts were issued for more than 100 million people across 18 states and Washington, D.C. as of July 17, with some parts of the Midwest reporting the worst air quality in the nation.
