EU position paper accuses China of amplifying security threats

The EU said the paper, approved by foreign ministers on July 13, will feed into a forthcoming European Security Strategy that links defence, energy, and supply chains.

The South China Morning Post reports that a new European Union position paper approved by foreign ministers on July 13 accuses Beijing of amplifying security threats and reviving “sphere-of-influence logic” aimed at reshaping the global order.

The document, titled “Common Understanding: The Threats and Challenges We Face,” frames China as an enabler of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and it cites Beijing’s “assertive behaviour” in the South China Sea as a risk to European and Indo-Pacific security, stability, and prosperity.

According to SCMP Economy, the EU groups China-related concerns into a single threat assessment that includes Beijing’s industrial scale and technological ambitions, commercial leverage, control of critical raw materials, its partnership with Russia, and its regional conduct.

The outlet adds that, in March, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said the position paper is expected to underpin a forthcoming European Security Strategy, connecting defence policy with energy and supply chain considerations.
