Indonesia joins China-led AI body amid scrutiny of US digital ties
Indonesia is among 29 countries signing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation, and analysts say the step may hinge on a US trade agreement that requires consultation before digital trade pacts that could affect American interests.
Indonesia has joined a new China-led artificial intelligence initiative, a move that has prompted questions about how Jakarta’s digital ambitions could affect its relationship with Washington. SCMP Economy reports that Indonesia became one of 29 countries to sign an agreement to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation, or Waico.
For Indonesia, joining Waico is seen as a potential pathway to AI training and infrastructure, along with a larger role in global AI governance. The outlet notes that founding members include Russia, Brazil, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
Analysts cited by SCMP Economy said the participation could be interpreted as a political manoeuvre that may test a recent trade agreement with the US. Under that arrangement, Jakarta would need to consult Washington before entering digital trade pacts that could jeopardise American interests.
Waico’s launch included remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who framed AI development as requiring broad cooperation rather than a single-country effort. SCMP Economy also reports that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres attended the ceremony.
