Iran warns U.S. missile strike on nuclear plant could pose safety risk
The IAEA said the Karun, or Darkhovin, power plant attack did not risk a nuclear fuel release because the site was still under early-stage construction and contained no fuel at its last inspection.
Iran has warned that a U.S. missile strike on a nuclear power plant under construction in Khuzestan province could create a nuclear safety risk, according to statements relayed by Iran’s UN ambassador to the Security Council, as reported by OilPrice.
Iran’s ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said U.S. forces fired multiple missiles at the Karun power plant, also known as Darkhovin, and argued the attack occurred despite International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards and Iran’s assertion that activities at the site are exclusively peaceful and transparent in line with Iran’s nuclear deal.
The report says the strikes were part of the 18th wave of U.S. missile attacks on Iranian targets, and Iravani urged the Security Council to condemn them as a violation of international law that prohibits attacks on civil nuclear facilities.
OilPrice adds that the IAEA stated the Karun power plant attack did not risk a nuclear fuel release because the facility was in early construction stages and contained no fuel at the time of the IAEA’s last inspection. Construction began in December 2022, and the plant is expected to reach 300 MW nameplate capacity when completed.
