Malaysia advances cybercrimes bill as online fraud charges surge
Online fraud charges reached 8,014 from January through May 2026, exceeding 6,140 recorded across all of 2025, according to Malaysia’s deputy prime minister.
Malaysia moved closer to replacing its nearly 30-year-old cybercrime framework as the Cybercrimes Bill 2026 won approval in the upper house, pending royal assent and gazettement, according to the SCMP Economy.
The bill, first tabled on June 22 and passed by Malaysia’s lower house on July 1, is designed to update powers for investigating online fraud, digital impersonation, and AI-generated abuse, replacing the Computer Crimes Act 1997.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told parliament that 8,014 charges related to online fraud were recorded between January and May this year, surpassing 6,140 recorded throughout 2025, and he cited rising frequency and financial losses.
SCMP Economy reports experts say the bill’s real impact will depend on whether investigators can enforce it effectively while avoiding misuse of the new authorities.
