Rubio to meet Wang Yi amid Trump comments on alleged election meddling
The planned Manila talks come days after Trump alleged China obtained more than 200 million US voter records.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila on Wednesday, on the sidelines of meetings involving the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the South China Morning Post reports. The encounter is tied to President Donald Trump’s comments signaling Washington will raise Beijing’s alleged interference in the 2020 US election.
In remarks to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said the two sides would discuss the issue, adding that the alleged interference “took place a long time ago” and that China “might be a little bit different today” than it was then. Trump also suggested the relationship involves reciprocal actions, saying, “They do things to us and we do things to them.”
The report says people familiar with the planning expect the Rubio-Wang meeting to occur in the Philippines’ capital on Wednesday. It comes less than a week after Trump accused China of what he described as the “largest compromise of election data in history,” alleging Beijing illicitly obtained more than 200 million US voter records.
