Solomon Islands to sign deal for US Coast Guard patrols

The arrangement would let US Coast Guard patrols operate with local police aboard, as Prime Minister Matthew Wale visited Washington to deepen maritime cooperation.

The Solomon Islands is set to sign a deal that would allow the US Coast Guard to patrol its waters with local police aboard, Prime Minister Matthew Wale said during a trip to Washington.

Wale met the US Coast Guard vice commandant, Admiral Thomas Allan, and discussed evolving bilateral ties with senior US officials, according to a US State Department readout.

The State Department said Wale also met Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, and that the two signed a Letter of Intent to return Peace Corps to the Solomon Islands.
