Thailand price drop pulls global rice market lower
The International Grains Council said its price index fell 1% since the prior month, while the UN FAO reported June rice prices were still 3.2% higher than May.
World Grain reports that lower rice prices in Thailand have weighed on overall global rice values, even as some other origins saw increases.
According to the International Grains Council July 16 Grain Market Report, the group’s rice price index declined 1% since its previous monthly report, “mostly reflecting weakness in Thailand,” where 5% broken white rice export prices fell by $31 to $450 fob (Bangkok). The IGC linked the drop to the upcoming off-season harvest and subdued international demand.
World Grain also notes that prices firmed in several other countries. The IGC said 5% broken rice in Vietnam rose by $8 to $420 (Ho Chi Minh), and 5% broken prices in Pakistan increased by $9 to $414 (Karachi), supported by tighter supplies, while parboiled quotations in India climbed by $14 to $355 (Kakinada) on sales to West Africa and concerns about deficient monsoon rains.
The story adds that the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, in its Rice Price Index released July 3, found June prices were 3.2% higher than May, placing them 2.6% above the May 2025 level and at their highest since January 2025. FAO data also showed indica prices leading the rise, with the glutinous index up 1% but aromatic prices down 0.7%.
