Zelensky dismisses Ukraine army chief Syrsky, appoints Drapaty
The change follows days of protests backing the ousted defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who accused Syrsky of blocking his military reforms.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he is dismissing Oleksandr Syrsky, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s army, amid a political crisis triggered after the removal of defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The decision comes as protests backed Fedorov over his exit from the government.
Zelensky said he is appointing joint forces commander Mykhailo Drapaty as the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Syrsky, 60, had led the armed forces since 2024 and previously commanded the defense of Kyiv at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, according to the report from SCMP Economy.
Syrsky’s removal followed complaints from Fedorov, who accused Syrsky of forcing him out and stalling his efforts to reform the military. Zelensky made the appointment decision in a post on Telegram, the outlet said.
